সারা বিশ্বে মহামারি আকার ধারণ করেছে করোনা ভাইরাস। বিশ্ব স্বাস্থ্য সংস্থার মতে বিশ্বের প্রায় দেশই এখন এই মহামারির শিকার। মানুষের সব চেষ্টা ব্যর্থ করে ক্রমশ; বাড়ছে মৃত্যুর হার। মূলত সামাজিক দূরত্ব বলতে বোঝায় নিজের বাসায় থাকা, ভিড়ে না যাওয়া, একজন আরেকজনকে স্পর্শ না করাকে। করোনা ভাইরাসের বিস্তার ঠেকানোর গুরুত্বপূর্ণ পদক্ষেপ হিসেবে সামাজিক দূরত্ব বজায় রাখা এবং স্বেচ্ছায় নিজেকে আলাদা করে রাখা অর্থাৎ সেলফ আইসোলেশনের পরামর্শই এখন প্রতিষেধক।

কোয়ারেন্টিন মানে সংক্রমণ ঝুঁকি এড়ানোর উদ্দেশ্যে ব্যক্তির চলাফেরাকে সীমাবদ্ধ করা। কোয়ারেন্টিন তাঁদের জন্যই প্রযোজ্য, যাঁরা রোগে আক্রান্ত হননি কিন্তু রোগীর সংস্পর্শে এসেছেন, রোগের প্রাদুর্ভাবযুক্ত এলাকায় থেকেছেন, অর্থাৎ যাঁরা রোগ ছড়াতে পারেন বলে সন্দেহ করা হচ্ছে।

কথাটা এসেছে ‘কোয়ারান্টাগাইরন’ থেকে, যার অর্থ ফরটি ডে (৪০ দিন)। প্লেগের সময় জাহাজের মাল খালাস করার আগে ৪০ দিন তীরে ভিড়ে থাকতে হতো। সম্প্রতি চীনসহ পৃথিবীর বিভিন্ন দেশে করোনাভাইরাসের কারণে কোয়ারেন্টিনের আগে কুষ্ঠ রোগ, পীতজ্বর বা ইয়েলো ফিভার, কলেরার মতো রোগের বিস্তার ঠেকানোর জন্য এ ব্যবস্থা নেওয়া হয়েছিল। সাম্প্রতিক সময়ের ইবোলাও এর একটা উদাহরণ।
